Zentrales Thema ist die Auseinandersetzung zwischen Moses und Aron um die Verkündigung des einzigen Gottes an das Volk. Für Moses ist Gott allein verkündbar im Gesetz und durch das Wort, Arons Verkündigung dagegen geschieht in Gestalt des goldenen Kalbes als Symbol. Moses zu Aron: “Verraten hast du Gott an die Götter, den Gedanken an die Bilder … das Außergewöhnliche an die Gewöhnlichkeit.”
