Im China der Tang-Dynastie eskortiert der in kaiserliche Ungnade gefallene Captain Li Zai Handelskarawanen entlang der Seidenstraße, wird aber von offizieller Seite als Schlächter diffamiert und von dem japanischstämmigen Regierungstreuen Lai Qi unbarmherzig verfolgt. Als er Li bei der Überführung einer heiligen buddhistischen Reliquie stellt, werden aus erbitterten Gegnern gezwungenermaßen Kampfgefährten, die sich mit ihren schutzbefohlenen Zivilisten gegen eine anrückende türkische Übermacht behaupten müssen.
