Edinburgh im 19.Jahrhundert: Der Arzt Dr.Knox kann seine Anatomiestudien nur hinderlich fortführen, da ihm das Gesetz nur die Arbeit mit den Leichen Hingerichteter erlaubt. Also engagiert er still und leise zwei dubiose Kerle namens Burke und Hare die als Leichenräuber bald ein gutes Geschäft machen. Als ihnen das nicht mehr genügt, beginnen sie, "unwichtige" Leute zu ermorden, um weiter Geld zu verdienen. Doch schließlich kommt die Wahrheit ans Licht und alle werden verhaftet.
